A touch of neon works at The Artist Project

March 5, 2012 · 0 comments

Opening night at The Artist Project was packed this year. Always a fun event, there was plenty of talent on display. It’s a great opportunity to discover someone new and really hone in on what you like. The neon girls added to the friendly approachable vibe. Art with no attitude – just what Toronto needed on a cold windy night.

Every year I manage to find a handful of artists whose work I enjoy. Last year it was Anne Barkley, Noella Noel and Richard Brightling. They were all back this year with new and interesting pieces. In all there were 200 juried, independent contemporary artists showing their work.  For a closer look at some of the talented participants, check out the gallery section of  The Artist Project website here. There’s something refreshing about meeting and dealing with each artist directly.

Richard Brightling’s starburst. He’s planning to recreate it in cedar for a client who wants a larger version that can be hung in the garden year round.

Robert Kamnatnik’s exhibit caught my eye this year with his striking contemporary paintings. After many years as an award-winning graphic artist, Robert now devotes himself full time to creating art. I bought a pair of black and white abstract paintings that I can’t wait to have framed. My friend interior designer Elle Jungkind is planning to commission Robert to do a large canvas for one of her clients. That’s what I love about the show. It allows you to find artists you can connect with later for custom work.

Robert Kamnatnik doesn’t have a website, but you can reach him at rkamnatnik@rogers.com

This installation by Sandra Poczobut attracted a lot of attention.

There were plenty of interesting characters to spice up the atmosphere.

These paintings were all part of the Energy competition.

Until next year!
